Mind you I was due Thursday, June 10th and finished working Friday, June 11th! Once at the hospital it took the nurse and doctor less than five minutes to tell me that my water had a high leak and I needed to be admitted. Wow ... we were really going to have this baby. So, we were admitted to Stevens Hospital on Saturday morning around 8:30am.
I was still at about 2cm and no contractions but since they assumed my water had been leaking since the previous evening they were concerned about infection. I was immediately put on antibiotics through an IV along with fluids. About 10am they began the Pitocin to try and encourage things along. About noon everything kicked into high gear. My body and the Pitocin decided now was the time. My contractions were hard, fast and only allowing me about 30 seconds in between. Around 2pm I was begging for fetinol (sp?) and then my epidural. I now completely see why people want to marry the person that gives them the epidural. I think I told the guy I'd marry him at least four or five times! Life was fabulous after I got my drugs. Fast forward to about 8pm, only at 6cm ... midnight I had moved to 8cm. During the day we had the most fabulous nurse, Amber ... Ben and I actually considered naming Lizzy Amber after the nurse because she was that fabulous! Trish was equally as fabulous as she was my "mothering" nurse from 7pm to 7am, after Amber. I only call her that as she was so supportive and informative and fun to talk to. Back to the birth story! At midnight Trish and I were discussing a c-section, figuring if we prepared for it, we wouldn't need to execute. Mind you Ben was sleeping at this point (I probably should have been too).
All of a sudden at 2am on Sunday I am 10cm, she has "dropped" and we can see her head. Well part of it. I pushed for two and a half hours counting on Trish and Ben to help me through each contraction as I was so out of it and exhausted I was falling asleep between each contraction (yes, crazy I know)!
Around 4:15am the on-call doctor came in and watched me push a few times and was concerned I wasn't progressing at all. She called the OR doctor and she came in and watched me push once and said, no more I was done.
That decision was made at 4:30am, I was in the operating room with a slew of people including my hubbie and Dr. Moe (OR doctor who I came to also love) around 4:45am and Elizabeth was born at 5:13am.
I remember a few things at this point. First Dr. Moe saying "it's a girl" ... Ben and I looking at each other and pretty much saying "are you sure" ... we are convinced it was a boy for the last ten months! Secondly Dr. Moe states, she obviously has daddy's forehead and that is probably why she wasn't coming out the "normal" way. Lastly the nurses asking us what her name was and Ben and I looking at each other and then responding with "we aren't sure" ... oops! Good thing we had a few ideas!
Dr. Moe came into our room about an hour later and stated "there was no way in hell she was coming out of me with that head!" ... she takes after her dad and mom!
Final stats:
5:13AM ~ 9 pounds, 1 ounce ~ 20 1/2 inches
